When the problem is local, the work can be local
Most people call because something has gone wrong, not because they were planning roof work. A stain on a ceiling, tiles on the lawn after a storm, mortar dropping into the gutter. The job is to find what is actually causing it, not to seal over the nearest suspect.
A repair deals with the damaged or deteriorated area and leaves the rest of the roof alone. That only makes sense when the surrounding covering is still sound. If the repair is a sign that the whole roof is due for wider work, we will tell you - both answers are fine, you just need the right one.
We do not diagnose leaks from a photograph alone, and we do not promise emergency attendance. What we do is look at the roof, explain what we find, and quote the repair that follows from it.
Signs your roof may need a repair
These are typical reasons people get in touch. They may indicate a repair is needed - they are not a diagnosis on their own.
- Visible damaged or displaced tiles Cracked, slipped or missing tiles you can see from the ground, or fragments in the gutter or on the lawn.
- Suspected leak Water marks on a ceiling, damp in the roof space, or a stain that appears after rain. The source still needs to be found on the roof.
- Storm or weather damage Tiles moved, broken or missing after high wind or a storm. We inspect and photograph what we find.
- Ridge issues Capping that has moved, pointing that has dropped, or a section of ridge that no longer sits true.
- A deteriorated section One valley, one penetration or one slope that has failed while the rest of the roof still looks serviceable.
- An old patch that has given way Previous repair work that is no longer doing its job, or a temporary fix that was never meant to last.
What roof repairs can involve
The work follows the cause. These are typical repair jobs - included only where they apply to your roof.
Repairs often include replacing cracked or slipped tiles, reseating capping, localised repointing, and checking flashings where a wall, chimney or penetration meets the roof. If water is getting in, the first task is to find the path it is taking rather than treating the stain indoors.
Some repairs are small and contained. Others sit next to wider wear, in which case we will explain the difference between fixing the immediate problem and planning restoration or replacement.
Associated work - a short run of gutter, a flashing at a chimney, a few tiles around a repaired ridge - is included when it belongs with the repair, not as a way of enlarging the job.
