The roof edge: gutters, fascias and soffits
Guttering, fascias and soffits are the line around the house that throws water away and finishes the roof. We repair and replace them as one roofline service - often while access is already up for other roofing work.
The edge of the roof is part of the roof
Gutters catch water off the covering and take it to the downpipes. Fascias are the boards the gutters sit on. Soffits close the underside of the eaves. Together they are the edge of the house - and when they fail, water goes where it should not, timber moves, and the roof looks unfinished even if the tiles are fine.
This is one service because those parts belong together. Replacing a gutter onto a rotten fascia is not a finish. Painting a soffit while the gutter is still leaking is not a finish either. We repair or replace what has aged or been damaged, and we integrate that work with the covering when you are already having the roof done.
There is no need for heavy jargon. If the gutter leaks, sags, overflows, or the boards behind it have gone, that is enough to start.
Signs the roofline may need work
These are things you can often see from the ground. They may indicate repair or replacement is worth looking at.
- Gutters overflowing or leaking Water sheeting over the edge in rain, joints that drip, or staining down the fascia and wall.
- Gutters that have sagged or pulled away A line that is no longer true, brackets that have let go, or a gutter sitting off the fascia.
- Fascias that have deteriorated Timber that has weathered, moved or rotted behind the gutter, or sheeting that has failed.
- Soffits that are stained, loose or missing The underside of the eaves looking tired, or birds and weather getting in where the soffit has gone.
- The roof has been done, the edge has not A restored or new covering sitting on tired gutters and boards - the house still does not look finished.
What guttering, fascia and soffit work can involve
Repair where the component will still do. Replacement where it will not. Done together when they have failed together.
Work can include repairing leaking joints and failed brackets, replacing gutter runs and downpipes, and renewing fascia boards and soffit lining where they have aged or been damaged. The new gutter has to sit on something sound - that is why the fascia is part of the same job.
On a restoration or re-roof, this work is often most efficient while access is already up. It is still quoted as what is needed, not as a compulsory extra on every roof.
